Embroidery Designs for the embroidery were made in Adobe Photoshop. There are three phases in the making. Background images are constructed first of all. These are developed using various tools and techniques to adjust and rearrange images. Madeira metallic multicoloured thread is used during the machine embroidery stage, then the entire design is 'couched down' using 'Japan Gold' thread.
Lightboxes The lightboxes are a development of the embroidery work. By using light sources behind fabrics, the three dimensional structure and texture of the designs are complemented. I am currently engaged in the production of particularly large scale lightboxes for public spaces.
Tiles The 3D fabric tiles work is started with the help of Freeform computer software. This package allows the designer to work in 3D, as if working on a block of clay. Using virtual tools the artist can chip and mould the 'clay' to whatever shape is chosen. This work was carried out at the Hot House in Stoke on Trent, a design and development centre instituted with the help of the city, supported by large ceramic firms such as Wedgewood and Royal Doulton.
